Description

A Rather Special Planetary Nebula: NGC 5189

We are continuing our collection of planetary nebulae. This time, it's NGC 5189's.

This nebula, 1800 light-years away, in the southern constellation of the Fly, has a peculiar shape. Its clouds form an S, which is probably the result of disturbances around the white dwarf that occupies the heart of the gas complex.
Other planetary nebulae owe their tormented shape to the fact that a double star system sits at their center. Its dual bipolar or quadrupole structure could be explained by the presence of a second star orbiting the central star and influencing the mass ejection pattern during its nebula-producing agony. The rest of the central star, having lost much of its mass, is now living its last days as a white dwarf. However, there is no visual candidate for the possible companion.
This same object represents the final stage of evolution of a star like the Sun, which, after swelling into a red giant, has released its envelope into space to form a nebula.
